CGFNS and Credential Evaluation for Indian Nurses
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource for internationally educated nurses
The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) provides credential evaluation services used by many US state boards of nursing. For Indian nurses, a CGFNS evaluation typically reviews nursing education, licensure in India, and English proficiency to determine comparability with US standards.
Typical process
Applicants create an account, submit educational and licensure documents (often directly from the issuing institutions), and complete any required English testing. CGFNS issues a report that the candidate or the state board can use. Some boards accept evaluations from other approved agencies; others specifically require CGFNS.
Document requirements can include transcripts, course descriptions, and proof of registration with a state nursing council in India. Incomplete or unofficial documents commonly cause delays. Candidates should follow CGFNS instructions carefully and allow sufficient time before their planned NCLEX or licensure application.
Disclaimer: CGFNS processes and accepted documents can change. Verify current requirements on the official CGFNS website and with the target state board.
