Choosing an Aged Care Home in the UK
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource
Selecting a care home involves balancing care needs, location, cost, and the quality of daily life the home can offer. A systematic approach reduces the chance of an unsuitable placement.
Assess needs first
Request a care needs assessment from the local authority. This identifies the level of support required and whether residential or nursing care is appropriate. The assessment also informs funding discussions. Involve the person who will be moving, where possible, so their preferences are considered.
Compare options
- Check CQC ratings and recent inspection reports
- Visit shortlisted homes at different times
- Ask about staffing levels, staff training, and turnover
- Review activity programs and how individual preferences are supported
- Clarify fees, what is included, and any additional charges
- Ask how the home communicates with families and handles concerns
Location matters for family visits. Also consider whether the home can meet changing needs over time or whether a move would be required later. Independent advice is available from organizations such as Age UK.
