Understanding CQC Ratings for Care Homes in England
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. It inspects care homes and awards ratings that are published online. These ratings are a useful starting point when comparing homes, but they should be read alongside the full inspection report.
The five key questions
CQC inspectors ask whether a service is safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led. Each question receives a rating of outstanding, good, requires improvement, or inadequate. An overall rating is also given. Homes rated inadequate or that fail to improve may face enforcement action.
Using the ratings
Search for a home on the CQC website to see its current rating, inspection history, and any enforcement notices. Read the most recent report for details on staffing, medicines management, infection control, and resident feedback. Ratings can change after a new inspection, so check the date of the latest report. Families should also visit the home and speak with staff and, where possible, residents or relatives.
