Dementia Care in UK Care Homes
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource
A large proportion of care home residents in the UK live with dementia. Good dementia care emphasizes person-centered support, a familiar environment, and staff who understand how to respond to distress or changed behavior without unnecessary medication.
What good dementia care looks like
- Staff trained in dementia awareness and communication
- Consistent routines and familiar objects that support orientation
- Meaningful activities matched to the person’s life history and current abilities
- Safe indoor and outdoor spaces that allow movement
- Regular review of medications, especially antipsychotics
- Involvement of family in care planning and daily life
Some homes specialize in dementia care and are registered accordingly. When comparing homes, ask about dementia-specific training, how behavioral symptoms are assessed, and whether the home uses a recognized dementia care framework. CQC reports often comment on dementia care practices.
