Family Involvement in Nursing Home Care
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource
Family involvement improves quality of life for many nursing home and care home residents. Families often know the person’s history, preferences, and routines better than anyone else. Facilities are expected to welcome family participation in care planning and daily life, within reasonable boundaries.
Ways families can contribute
- Attend care-plan meetings and share important life history
- Visit regularly and observe how the person is doing
- Communicate changes in mood, appetite, or function promptly
- Participate in activities when appropriate
- Advocate respectfully if concerns arise
- Support the person’s relationships with other residents and staff
Clear communication channels help. Ask the facility how best to reach the nurse or manager and how updates are shared. Most homes have processes for raising concerns; the long-term care ombudsman (US) or local authority and CQC (UK) can provide additional support if needed.
