Infection Prevention for Care Staff in Long-Term Care
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource
Care assistants and nurses are on the front line of infection prevention in long-term care. Consistent basic practices protect residents, staff, and visitors from the spread of infections.
Everyday practices
- Perform hand hygiene before and after resident contact and after removing gloves
- Use personal protective equipment correctly when indicated
- Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces and shared equipment
- Follow safe handling of linens and waste
- Stay home when ill and report exposures promptly
- Support resident and visitor hand hygiene
Facilities provide training and supplies; staff are responsible for applying the practices every shift. Outbreaks require additional measures directed by the infection prevention lead and, when needed, public health authorities. Regular competency checks and a culture that encourages speaking up about lapses improve safety.
