NCLEX for Indian Nurses: An Overview

Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource for internationally educated nurses

The NCLEX-RN is the licensing examination used by US state boards of nursing to determine whether a candidate is prepared for entry-level registered nurse practice. Indian nurses who completed a recognized nursing program and wish to work in the United States must typically pass the NCLEX-RN and meet additional state-specific requirements.

Basic eligibility pathway

Most Indian candidates begin by having their nursing education evaluated by a credentialing body such as CGFNS or by applying directly to a state board of nursing. Requirements vary by state. Common steps include verification of education, English language proficiency, a criminal background check, and successful completion of the NCLEX-RN. Passing the exam does not automatically grant a license or a visa; both require separate processes.

What the exam tests

The NCLEX-RN uses computerized adaptive testing and focuses on clinical judgment, safety, and the ability to make sound nursing decisions. It is aligned with the current NCSBN test plan. Indian nurses often find that the style of questions differs from exams they took during their training in India, particularly in the emphasis on prioritization and delegation.
