Residential vs Nursing Care Homes in the UK
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource
Understanding the difference between a residential care home and a nursing home helps families choose the right setting. Both provide accommodation and support, but the level of clinical care available differs.
Residential care homes
These homes provide personal care and support with daily living. Staff are trained in care but are not required to include registered nurses on every shift. They suit people who need help with mobility, meals, or personal care but do not require ongoing skilled nursing interventions.
Nursing homes (care homes with nursing)
Nursing homes must have registered nurses available. They can manage more complex needs such as wound care, medication administration requiring nursing judgment, and monitoring of unstable medical conditions. Some residents move from residential to nursing care if their needs increase.
The CQC inspects both types of homes and publishes ratings. When comparing options, review the home’s registration categories, recent inspection reports, and whether it can meet the specific needs identified in the person’s care assessment.
