State Board Requirements for Indian-Educated Nurses in the USA
Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource for internationally educated nurses
Each US state board of nursing sets its own requirements for internationally educated nurses. Indian nurses must meet the rules of the state in which they intend to be licensed. There is no single national standard beyond the NCLEX-RN itself.
Common requirements
- Graduation from a nursing program deemed comparable to US standards
- Credential evaluation (often through CGFNS or a board-approved service)
- English language proficiency (IELTS, OET, or other accepted exams)
- Criminal background check and fingerprinting
- Application fees and, in some states, additional coursework
Processing times and document requirements differ. Candidates should contact the chosen state board early, request a checklist, and keep copies of all submissions. Some states participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact, but compact privileges generally require an active multistate license issued by a compact state.
Disclaimer: State rules change. Always confirm current requirements directly with the board of nursing.
