Visa and Immigration Pathways for Indian Nurses to the USA

Updated 30 October 2026 · Educational resource for internationally educated nurses

Passing the NCLEX-RN and receiving a state nursing license are necessary steps for most Indian nurses who want to practice in the United States, but they do not by themselves authorize employment or entry. A separate immigration process is required.

Common considerations

Many nurses enter through employment-based pathways sponsored by a US healthcare employer. The specific visa category, processing time, and requirements depend on the employer, the nurse’s qualifications, and current immigration rules. Some candidates explore other temporary or permanent options; each has its own eligibility criteria and limitations.

Immigration law is complex and changes. Nurses should consult a qualified immigration attorney or accredited representative and should be cautious of promises of guaranteed visas or unusually fast processing. Official information is available from US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of State.
